Holt Festival – Sir John Hurt Art Prize

Holt Festival is again delighted to announce a prize of £1,500 for the winner of this years’ Holt Festival - Sir John Hurt Art Prize. In addition, the winning work will go on to be exhibited in the autumn at the prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich.

Alongside his amazing acting career the late Sir John Hurt was a painter, at the age of 17 he attended The Grimsby Art School (now the East Coast School of Art and Design) and in 1959, he won a scholarship to Saint Martin's School of Art (now Central St. Martin’s in London). He continued to paint throughout much of his life, until late last year. He was passionately interested in encouraging others, in recent years becoming Chancellor of Norwich University of The Arts. He supported the Holt Festival Art Prize, either awarding or judging or both, almost every year since its inception.

Announcement of the Winner

The winner will be announced by Lady Hurt at a private view of the Exhibition of Shortlisted Works on the evening of Sunday 23rd July at the Auden Foyer, Auden Theatre, Gresham's School, Cromer Road, Holt.

Exhibition of Shortlisted Works

In the foyer of the Auden Theatre, Gresham's School, Cromer Road, Holt  - 11.00am – 5.00pm  Sunday 23rd –Sunday 30th July and evenings when there are Festival events on in the Auden Theatre.

The exhibition of between 25 and 30 shortlisted works forms part of the Holt Festival Art Trail which will feature a dozen exhibitions at venues around Holt, including the Festival Loan Exhibitions which this year will feature original works by some of Britain’s greatest 20th century artists including Barbara Hepworth, Lucian Freud, Christopher Wood, Francis Bacon and many other important figures.

Entries open on Saturday 18th February 2017

Deadline for submissions: midnight Sunday 18th June 2017

All entrants will be emailed with the shortlisted entries by Sunday 25th June 2017 and the shortlisted works will be listed on the festival website.

All entrants will receive invitations to the Private View at the Auden Theatre on the evening of Sunday 23rd July at which the winner will be announced by the judges.

To enter the Art Prize download and complete an application form. Select the number of images you would like to enter and complete the entry fee payment using the PayPal link below. Terms & Conditions of Entry

Please read these carefully and keep a copy for your records.

Entrants acknowledge their acceptance by registering. Holt Festival Art Prize is open to anyone aged 16 or older.

All work submitted must be available for inclusion in the Holt Festival Art Prize Exhibition, Saturday 22nd July – Sunday 30th July 2017. Work must not exceed 1.25 metres in any direction and must be wall-mounted and appropriately framed. Submitted images should be sent as jpgs no larger than 2MB. The judges will view them both on screen and printed.

When the shortlist is announced the successful artists will receive instructions about delivery to Holt over the weekend of 15/16th July. Artists are responsible for wrapping and arranging transport. 

Collection of unsold shortlisted works will be from the Auden Theatre on Sunday 30th July between 4.30pm and 6pm, otherwise by appointment.

Artists may opt to sell their work. The festival will charge 22%+VAT commission on all sales.

The judge's decisions are final and binding; no correspondence can be entered into.

Once an entry form has been submitted, no refunds of entry fees, part or whole, will be given.
