JOHN HURT – As Artist

The Mezzanine, Auden Theatre, Holt
Saturday 21st – Sunday 29th July 11am -7.30pm   Entry Free

Film legend Sir John Hurt (Midnight Express; The Elephant Man; Nineteen Eighty Four; Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ……the Harry Potter films and many more) who died last year, trained as an artist at Grimsby School of Art then won a scholarship to St. Martin’s in London. Although he chose acting as his career he painted throughout his life. His enthusiasm for expression was infectious, he loved encouraging others, being appointed a very hands-on Chancellor of Norwich University of the Arts.

This exhibition, the first ever of his work, is an exciting opportunity to see a selection of his mainly figurative paintings and drawings. These intimate works, a few of which are depictions relating to his films, such as John Merrick (The Elephant Man 1980), mostly relate to his off-screen life.

Robert Upstone (Former Head of Modern British Art, Tate Gallery) said “John Hurt brought the same creativity and brilliance to being an artist as he did an actor – this is an exhibition not to be missed”.

Anwen, Lady Hurt who has kindly loaned the majority of the works commented “Whenever anyone referred to John’s painting as a ‘hobby’ he was quick to point out that a painting was not something he did for relaxation or a bit of fun, he took it every bit as seriously as he took his acting career
